The Brainerd Lakes Area is a wedding destination area. The gorgeous lakes, resorts, family cabins, venues, and event centers make a picture-perfect area for a dream wedding event. It continues to draw couples even in the 2020 pandemic.
We have had so many couples call us because they have had to make difficult decisions. Soon to be brides have had to put their weddings on hold, downsize, rethink or rearrange. These brides and grooms have been so creative in adjusting their 2020 wedding celebrations. Some have opted to hang up their wedding dress in their closet and wait until 2021.
There are a variety of questions that have been asked in regards to 2020 weddings:
- What is happening with weddings that are planned in 2020?
-If a couple still wants to have their wedding in 2020 what are there options?
-What wedding rental items are being rented?
-How many guests will attend the wedding?
-How are they going to practice social distancing?
-Do soon to be newlyweds have a smaller ceremony then have a reception in 2021?
-Do they postpone their wedding to 2021?
Sooo many questions...right??? And no answer is wrong...creativity and flexibility are the keys.
Wedding rental specialist, Lori of Party Time Rental, has some answers to those questions. Here’s the inside scoop on what is happening in the Brainerd Lakes Area Wedding Industry from a wedding rental business point of view.
What’s happening: We are seeing and hearing from parents of the couples, grandparents, and the couples themselves. It takes a tribe to make a 2nd plan or adjust what was planned to keep everyone safe. We are so happy to say that 98% of our clients come to us with a well thought out plan to ensure their event will be a celebration to remember. Moms & Dads are helping overwhelmed couples replan and the Grandma & Grandpas are offering up a smaller backyard event to have their grandchildren tie the know. Many large venue events are now downsized to cabin or backyard events.
Postponements: We have had about 40% of our large wedding events move into 2021. We have moved contracts with no penalties and so far everyone has been able to retain all of their equipment as was originally planned. That is pretty awesome - 2021 is looking busier than ever!
Social distancing: This covers a few things, wedding invitations have been downsized, RSVPs are at approximately 50% is what we are experiencing in count adjustments to contracts, and people are spreading out their events. We have had clients keep the original size of the canopy, add additional tables to spread out guests into family or friend groups that have been socializing together. Others have split the event into a garage or pole shed on the premise to extend additional space for guests.
Options: Indoor Venues at 25-50% capacity at the venue's discretion. Outdoor venues up to 250 with social distancing and outdoor private resident options are at the client's discretion for safety. We have seen that our clients are using good common sense and making sure social distancing seating is in place. We are renting canopies - mostly no walls - tables, chairs, lighting options, and very few dance floors. If there is a dance it would be at a private residence and they are maximizing that space.
Guest Counts: On average the counts are coming in about 50% of invited numbers. If your guests are from out of town, for the most part, they are deciding not to travel. The older folk, aunts & uncles and grandparents, are maybe not attending to keep themselves safe. Think about a Zoom option to zone in on the wedding ceremony so they can see the union and at another time you can celebrate with them. What a great excuse to go visit them after things are safe to be visiting again!
All in all, the full cancellations have been few and the majority have postponed into later months of this year or into 2021. Our season is definitely NOT what we were planning, but we are being as fluid and flexible with clients as possible. We are able to do our job safely outdoors with limited contact and the whole BLA is working diligently to remain a “safe” place to do business. We are proud to be part of Lakes Country Cares and continue to service our clients with great service and quality products.
